Does Insurance Cover Hail Damage in Texas?

Rusty's Bodywerks Farmersville, TX 5 min read

North Texas is one of the most hail-prone regions in the entire country. Every spring and summer, storms roll through Collin County and leave thousands of vehicles looking like golf balls. If your car just got hammered, the first question on your mind is probably: will my insurance pay for this?

The short answer is yes โ€” if you have the right coverage. Here's everything you need to know.

What Type of Coverage Covers Hail?

Hail damage is covered under comprehensive coverage โ€” not collision. This is an important distinction because comprehensive and collision are two separate parts of your auto insurance policy.

โœ… Comprehensive Coverage

  • Hail damage
  • Flood and water damage
  • Fire damage
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Hitting an animal
  • Falling objects

โœ— Collision Coverage

  • Does NOT cover hail
  • Covers accidents with other vehicles
  • Covers hitting a fixed object
  • Separate deductible applies

If you only have liability insurance โ€” the minimum required in Texas โ€” hail damage to your own vehicle is not covered. You need comprehensive coverage for that.

Will Filing a Hail Claim Raise My Rates?

This is the question everyone asks โ€” and the good news is that comprehensive claims generally do not raise your insurance rates in Texas. Here's why: hail is considered an "act of God" โ€” something entirely outside your control. Insurance companies typically do not penalize you for weather-related comprehensive claims the way they might for an at-fault collision.

That said, if you file multiple comprehensive claims in a short period, some insurers may reassess your policy at renewal. If you're unsure, call your agent before filing โ€” we can also help you understand your options.

How to File a Hail Damage Claim โ€” Step by Step

Step 01
Document the Damage First
Before you do anything else, photograph every panel of your vehicle in good lighting. Walk around the entire car and capture the roof, hood, trunk, and all body panels. The more documentation you have, the stronger your claim.
Step 02
Call Your Insurance Company
Contact your insurer to open a comprehensive claim. They'll ask for your policy number, the date of the storm, and your documentation. Keep a record of your claim number and the adjuster's name.
Step 03
Choose Your Own Repair Shop
Remember โ€” in Texas, you choose your shop. The insurance company may suggest one of their preferred shops, but you are not required to use it. Call Rusty's Bodywerks first. We'll inspect the damage and make sure your claim covers everything that needs to be fixed.
Step 04
Let Us Handle the Rest
Once you bring your vehicle to us, we communicate directly with your insurance adjuster. We document every dent, make sure nothing is missed, and fight for the repair your vehicle deserves. You pay your deductible โ€” we handle everything else.

PDR vs Traditional Repair โ€” What's Best for Hail?

For most hail damage, we use Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) โ€” a technique that removes dents from the inside of the panel without any filler or repainting. It preserves your original factory paint, which is always the strongest and most durable finish your car will ever have.

For severe hail damage where the paint is cracked or the metal is too deformed for PDR, we use traditional repair methods with a full repaint โ€” color-matched to your vehicle's factory code.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: After a major hailstorm in Collin County, roving "storm chasers" often show up offering fast cheap repairs. Many of them leave town before you notice the problems. Always use a local, established shop with a real warranty. Rusty's Bodywerks has been in Farmersville for years and backs every hail repair with a lifetime transferable warranty.
